Most Couples Wait Too Long to Ask for Help
The research on this is consistent: couples typically wait six or more years after problems start before seeking therapy. By then, patterns are entrenched, trust has eroded, and both people have rehearsed their version of what went wrong so many times it feels like fact.
You might recognize some of this: the same argument cycling through for years with no resolution, one person shutting down while the other escalates, a slow drift into parallel lives where the relationship technically continues but genuine connection has faded. Or something more acute, a betrayal, a loss, a transition that cracked the foundation and left both of you unsure how to move forward.
Couples counseling does not fix a relationship by making one person right. It works by helping two people understand what is actually happening between them, and giving them tools to do something different.
What Couples Therapy at SomaMind Looks Like
Couples counseling at SomaMind is trauma-informed and somatic, which means it takes seriously the fact that relational patterns are not just behavioral, they are physiological. The way you shut down, the way you escalate, the things that feel unbearable in conflict: a lot of that lives in the nervous system, not just in the story you tell about your relationship.
Sessions work with both partners to understand those patterns, where they came from and how they play out between you, and to build something more sustainable. This is not about keeping score or assigning blame. It is about the relationship itself as the focus of care.
A Counselor Who Works with the Whole Relationship
Leslie Vaughn, MS, LPC Associate, is a Certified Trauma Professional and Certified Narcissistic Abuse Specialist with a clinical background dating to 2011. Her somatic approach to couples work means she pays attention not just to what is said in sessions but to how each person is showing up physically: what is present in the body when things get tense, and what regulation looks like for each partner.
SomaMind is also an LGBTQ+ affirming practice. Leslie is a community member and works with couples of all identities and relationship structures, including same-sex couples, queer partnerships, and non-traditional relationship configurations.
Supervised by Erin T. James, MA, LPC-S (TX LC# 63911). Sliding scale rates available.
What to Expect from Couples Counseling
Step 1: A shared starting point.
Step 2: The real work.
Step 3: A relationship you actually want.
What Couples Often Take Away
- Clearer communication: Less cycling through the same argument, more actually understanding what the other person means and needs.
- Nervous system awareness: Tools for recognizing when you or your partner is flooded, and how to stay regulated enough to actually hear each other.
- A neutral, skilled space: Having a third person in the room who is trained in this work changes what is possible in a conversation that has been stuck for a long time.
